Crows are a common sight where I live, gathering on the telegraph lines and tumbling through the air in the evenings like dice thrown by an invisible hand. The sound of a multitude of wings and the visceral rush of air as they pass connects me with sensory memories of the movement of the sea, and of the swims that are a huge part of my life in the warmer months. Both birds and water show up frequently in my work, as in this painting - reminders of the freeing experience of being immersed in the natural world.
