It is fascinating how the view of St. Ives Bay changes and reveals different perspectives and views depending on where you are in the bay.
There’s a very old tale about a Gwithian farmer with two sons. One son lives in America. The other son works on the farm. The old farmer didn’t really go out on the towans at night. But one night his son was out looking for a lost cow and hadn’t come home, so the old farmer went looking for him. When he found him, they were high enough to see the view across the bay. Apon seeing the lights of St. Ives the old farmer said to his son, “Hell is that America boy?”
